DULUTH, GA, MARCH 2010 — Competitive Edge Sports, the nation’s foremost provider of sports performance services, today announced that its founder will be part of a U.S. team of clinicians selected to educate, train, and counsel 14 summer Olympic teams in Beijing, China. Carlton E. “Chip” Smith ,Jr., B.S., M.S.S., National Director of Sports Performance for CES, was initially invited by China’s Olympic Committee and its National Sports Training Center to assess the athletes training methods and evaluate training techniques. His work this year will focus on providing educational and training to Chinese Olympic team doctors, coaches, and athletes to help preclude further injuries, while promoting the benefits of sports performance, and providing fellowship opportunities in the U.S. for the Olympic team athletes.
"This is an incredible opportunity to provide expert information to this outstanding group of athletes," said Chip Smith. “There are no schools that teach sports performance in China and the Olympic Committee and the National Sports Training Center chose me and Dr. Bob Donatelli of Physiotherapy Associates to help lay the groundwork for an outstanding education and physical training program for more than 1000 athletes representing 14 Olympic teams. I saw an immediate response with the 21 Olympic gold medalist athletes we trained and we are looking forward to a broader scope of work this year to get even better results from the athlete’s existing training routines.”
In 2009, the Chinese government tasked its National Sports Training Center with improving its professional athlete’s education level, including: providing strength and conditioning, performance enhancement, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services. Chip Smith and Dr. Bob Donatelli have more than 30 years of experience in sports performance and physical therapy and have educated sports medicine teams and trained athletes in numerous countries around the world.
Chip became involved in the training program based on a request by Dr. Lilian Chin, PT, DPT, OCS Director of Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation, All-China Sports Federation, Education Division, and chief rehabilitation specialist for the National Sports Training Center. Her association with Chip Smith and her familiarity with the athlete’s needs was instrumental in bringing the U.S. team to China for the initial interviews. Dr. Chin will also be involved in the training sessions in 2010.
Dr, Chin states, “In the short time that Chip was in China, he made a great impact on the Chinese athletes, doctors and training staff. They recognize how important he is to their Olympic program. In addition, his training programs for the Olympic athletes have already shown success and I continue to get requests for him to train more athletes and teams.”
